The LEED-certified Alexander Montessori School serves as a positive learning environment for students that’s also a sustainable campus that incorporates both nature -- a grove of oaks -- and public art. The public art takes the form of a series of window fins with an abstract hibiscus flower, a primary teaching tool in the Montessori program. Large overhangs protect other classroom windows and a silver metal roof reflects daytime heat. The cantilevered roof is lined with locally sourced pine and rain collected from the roof is collected in a cistern for irrigation. Daylighting and outdoor views are integrated into the design.
