The Birchwood, a Tampa Bay area hotel, was originally built in 1924 and designed by architect George Feltham. At the time, it was the only Spanish Mission-style building overlooking Tampa Bay. The structure has been completely revitalized and is now one of the hippest in the area, after having been at a foreclosure auction in 2011.
Once a three-story inn with 18 rooms, Chuck Prather breathed new life into the hotel when he purchased it and renovated it, keeping the exterior walls intact and gutting the interior. The Birchwood still has 18 spacious rooms; however, two additional floors have been added, including a rooftop lounge with stunning views. The additional levels were added with a modern twist, using exposed metal, glass walls and waterfalls. The original façade was rebuilt to be historically accurate. The Birchwood, located on Beach Drive, gives guests expansive views of Straub Park and Tampa Bay.
