Sunrise Public Safety Complex

Sunrise Public Safety Complex

Sunrise

Built in 2011.

Designed by Architects Design Group.

"The 132,000-SF Sunrise Public Safety Complex was designed to house the entire operations of the Sunrise Police Department, the joint county / city 911 communications center (PSAP), fire-rescue administration and training, municipal EOC, city-wide management information systems (MIS) data center, and an eight-lane indoor firing range. Police divisions within the complex included administration, internal affairs, records, detective’s division, crime scene unit, crime analysis unit, property and evidence, victim advocacy program, patrol, SWAT, and crisis negotiation unit. The facility design also included an evidence processing lab. The structure is designed to withstand wind speeds of 160 mph, with 100 percent mechanical and electrical redundancy to all critical infrastructure to ensure the complex remains operational before, during and after a natural or manmade disaster, ensuring the safety of the community that it serves. The City of Sunrise is uniquely positioned in a central location of Broward County, neighboring the Everglades and just minutes from Fort Lauderdale and airport. The Sunrise Public Safety Complex has played an important role in Broward County and the City, by facilitating community policing and public safety since their opening in 2011 in this area. The new central location for the Sunrise Police Headquarters enabled law enforcement to better handle the local war on drugs, as well as crime prevention and investigation both in the City and County as a whole. The Sunrise Police Department currently maintains an Office of Community Policing Unit (OCP). The Unit employs four community resource officers and a supervisor. The goal of the unit is to foster positive relationships with local community members in an effort to establish and support a partnership against crime. The proximity to Sawgrass Expressway and other major roads, make the response time effective and quick to serve the community. The Public Safety Building includes a large Community Room that is used for a variety of events by the citizens, and the open spaces and central plaza have become a place to celebrate different community and municipal events. This space fosters police / public interaction and enables several community focused programs to take place such as a “Citizens Police Academy” and Seniors and Law Enforcement Together (SALT). The building’s welcoming lobby displays a sculpture centerpiece, designed and constructed by a local artist, as part of the City’s Community Art program. This sculpture and the design of the building as a whole serve as a reminder to the Community that “Public Safety” is about the serving and protecting residents of Sunrise."
